Artist Statement
My work is concerned with relating made objects to one another in the gallery environment, and is specific to its showing context. I am interested in playfully challenging the supposed status that plinths and other ‘invisible’ exhibiting conventions give to art work. My roughly made and economical approach contests the value of the finished art object, and my work can only be considered complete when shown to an audience, who are essential in giving it any meaning. I therefore destroy or recycle a lot of past works after they are shown, as they represent former ideas and contexts that later become irrelevant.
My best work often takes little time to make, is made cheaply and disregards notions of skill or materials as its value-giving element. I often use clay for its immediacy and adaptability, as it hardens fairly slowly and is suited to changing ideas and improvisation. In the same way as immediate sketches, these objects retain a rich sense of animation and vibrancy.
Freshness, humour and a sense of play are central to my practice.
